VAUXHALL MOTORS STATEMENT – VAUXHALL ZAFIRA FIRES

Vauxhall is continuing its investigations following reports of fire in the area of the heating and ventilation system in a number of Vauxhall Zafiras (Zafira B model launched in 2005, not current Zafira Tourer). While the number of incidents is very low in proportion to the number of vehicles on the road, we take this issue very seriously.

The safety of our customers is our number one priority. Our investigations so far have found that a number of incidents have occurred due to improper repair of the blower motor resistor and its thermal fuse, the item that protects the blower motor in event of a fault in or failure of the motor. Should the thermal fuse within the resistor fail, the resistor assembly should always be discarded, never repaired.

Vauxhall is writing to all affected Zafira owners to invite them for a free inspection of their vehicle’s heating and ventilation system and replace any parts necessary at no cost to the customer returning their vehicle to a safe operating condition.

HOW TO FIND OUT IF YOUR CAR IS AFFECTED

All our investigations relate to Zafira B models built between 2005 and 2014 and equipped with manual air conditioning (not Electronic Climate Control).

1. IF YOU HAVE THE ZAFIRA B MODEL BELOW, YOUR CAR COULD BE AFFECTED

If your Zafira B has Electronic Climate Control (ECC), it’s not affected. Please note that both manual air conditioning and climate control have similar-looking controls. However, climate control models have an ‘Auto’ button at the top-left of the unit, as shown.

2. IF YOU HAVE A ZAFIRA TOURER LIKE THE MODEL BELOW, YOUR CAR IS NOT AFFECTED

3. IF YOU HAVE THE ZAFIRA A MODEL BELOW, YOUR CAR IS NOT AFFECTED

WHAT ACTION IS VAUXHALL TAKING?

Vauxhall will inspect the heating and ventilation system on your vehicle, and replace any faulty or failed parts as necessary. This will be carried out free of charge. When parts are available we will write to you using customer names and addresses supplied by the DVLA and you will be requested to book an appointment with your dealer.

WHAT ACTION SHOULD CUSTOMERS TAKE?

If you are the first owner of your Zafira B and your heating and ventilation system is functioning well, and your car has never been subject to any repair in this area, there is no risk of a fire.

If you are not the first owner or you have had repairs in this area you should set your fan speed to zero (0) on the heating and ventilation system. If necessary you should use fan speed four (4) only for the time needed to demist the windscreen. Please continue to follow this advice until your vehicle has been inspected.

When you receive the follow-up letter from Vauxhall entitled “Zafira B Heater Fan Motor Resistor Action” please follow the steps enclosed to arrange your appointment for your vehicle inspection. Please be advised that the letters will be mailed out with utmost urgency as parts become available for the necessary work.
